Chris Down – artist / image maker
Chris Down is an artist, teacher and writer living in Sackville, New Brunswick. He has exhibited his work nationally at the Art Gallery of Calgary, Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art, Museum London, Forest City Gallery, the Owens Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Windsor among others. He has written features, reviews and catalogue essays for a variety publications in Canada. He is currently assistant professor in painting and drawing at Mt. Allison University.
Chris Down’s images and installations are very complex and honest. He creates spatial installations by merging and overlapping painted/drawn images sourced from popular media, family, local community events, and popular culture. Using exhibit themes reminiscent of paint-ball war arenas and industrial work sites, Down creates image field compositions that unfold a deep feeling of reverence/affiliation for the gritty underbelly of everyday life.
